After some discussions, we are going ahead w/ the following changes for active positions:
1B -> IF
2B -> MI
LF -> OF
The new active lineup for offense will thus be:
C IF MI SS 3B OF CF RF Util
The intention is to add some realistic flexibility to managing your offensive lineup that reflects how things would likely also work in real life. This might help trade activity a bit and will likely help new owners of dead teams a little also. And when we consider expansion again for 07, the extra lineup flexibility will likely help.

Sweet. Jeter and Peralta in the same infield!
But seriously I like this. It still maintains the CF, 3B necessity but the natural crossover positions (1b and CO) are flexible.
Out of curiosity why wasn't RF changed to a OF spot?

We didn't change RF to OF because typically RF is significantly more demanding than LF. LF in real life is very often (though not always) played by guys who are rather poor on defense and are often like a 1B who might be barely good enough to not be DH. Again, that's not to say all LF and all 1B are poor on defense, but most of them play those positions primarily because they're not good enough at the other positions. And often, the ones who are good enough to play other positions might have duo eligibility, eg. both Jason Bay and Hideki Matsui were LF/CF for most of last year (and should still be eligible this year) for instance and there are various 1B/LF types like Adam Dunn of course.
Yeah, the changes don't quite catch all the plausible situations, but going much further than this would probably make it a bit too easy. ;D
